The first time I ever heard Black Sabbath, which I’m sure is the same experience for most skaters within my demographic, was Matt Mumford’s part in Misled Youth. My older brother Nate then made me a CD including a list of songs from our favorite skate videos, mainly Misled Youth and Welcome to Hell. The full version of “N.I.B.” resonated with me most from the mix, no offense to the other timeless Iron Maiden tracks featured on there as well. I’ve always had an affinity for Sabbath, and after compiling all of the quintessential modest mouse parts previously, I thought it would be fun to do the same for these classic edits for your viewing pleasure.
While having a couple drinks at Live Wire the other night, “Sweet Leaf” came on the jukebox and we kept trying to decipher who skated to it. Luckily skate encyclopedia Chris Cole was there to put us on game and lead us to Eric Ruwadi’s part in Element’s Fine Artists Vol.1, a part I had never even seen or heard of before. Possibly the first skater to ever score a section to Sabbath. Also, for all you skate nerds out there, Duffel used “Embryo” for the intro of his Feed the Need part but I decided not to include it here because Tony Willie also skated to it for his intro in Cruel Kindness and then backs it up with “Children of the Grave.” Once again, if any parts were overlooked or not mentioned, please hit us up and provide some feedback! At the very least, we can foster some solid discussion about their best album of all time. Can you guess mine?
